[ARCHIVED] Rec Center closing for maintenance

The Boaz Recreation Center will be closed from December 21-December 31, 2017, due to annual maintenance required for the gym floor.  It will reopen Tuesday, January 2, 2018. Due to the amount of time needed to refinish the gym floors, it will be necessary for the work to be done during this time period.

Additionally, traffic in and out of the gym during the holiday season is much lower, making this a convenient time for the work on the floors to be done.

Parks and Recreation Director, Sonja Hard, regrets having to close for an extended period of time. However, protecting the wooden gym floors and the players utilizing the gym floors is of the utmost importance.

According to Hard, “We have so much action on the floor during the year that the gym floor finish wears off, and it becomes slick. That poses a safety hazard for our participants.”

Hard emphasizes, “We have had roughly 400 league basketball and volleyball games played on the floor in 2017. When you add practices and free play, that’s a lot of activity on the floor. The floor will be sanded and a fresh coat of floor finish will be applied and allowed to dry.  Once that is complete, the floor will look like new and will be safe for those playing on it.”

The Boaz Recreation center office will remain open from 7:00 AM-3:30 PM, December 21-22, 2017 and December 26-29, 2017.
