Whereas, cities across America have been plagued by the numerous problems associated with alcohol, tobacco,
and other drug use; and
Whereas, there is hope in winning the War on Drugs, and the hope lies in the hard work and determination of our communities to create a drug free environment; and
Whereas, local leaders, in government and in the community, know that the support of the people in the neighborhoods
is the most effective tool they can have in their efforts to reduce use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs by
Alabamians; and
Whereas, October 26 – November 1, 2008, has been designated National Red Ribbon Week with the City of Boaz
showing support by flying red flags on US Hwy 431 and municipal buildings; and
Whereas, Teachers, students, and parents can expect to see a great deal of "officer activity" on each campus
throughout the week and special events will encompass all five of the Boaz City School System campuses,
with different activities planned each day:
On Monday, there will be an education video and presentation to the students at Boaz High School. This
presentation will present (in graphic detail) the dangers of Crystal Meth. It will cover not only the dangers of
using this terrible drug, but also the legal ramifications of the same.
On Tuesday, there will be a safe driving activity with our student drivers. SRO Rusty Rowan will be speaking to
the driver’s education classes on a variety of topics dealing with driver safety and traffic laws.
On Wednesday, there will be a "car show" at Boaz Elementary School, where students will have the opportunity to view a variety of emergency vehicles as well as other "service" vehicles from different areas of life. Following the "car show", there will be a pep-rally at Corley Elementary School complete with music and cheer-leaders.
On Friday, SRO Rowan will be presenting his K9 partner "AIRES" at Boaz Intermediate School. This demonstration
will allow the students to experience an actual police K9 conducting a drug search.
Now, Therefore. Be It Resolved that I, Tim Walker, on behalf of the Council do hereby proclaim October 26 through
November 1, 2008, as Red Ribbon Week in Boaz, Alabama and encourage all citizens, businesses, public and
private agencies, media, religious and educational institutions to show their support by decorating with red this week
and wearing red on Friday.
