WHEREAS, Alzheimer’s is a devastating disease that impairs memory, reasoning, motor skills and the ability
to take care of oneself. The impact of Alzheimer’s on individuals, family and our health care system makes the
disease one of our nation’s primary medical, social and fiscal challenges, and
WHEREAS, Alzheimer’s affects every level of our society, and the statistics associated with the disease are
sobering: An estimated 4.5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease. By the year 2050, the number of
Americans with Alzheimer’s could skyrocket to 16 million. Half of adult Americans age 35 and older know someone
with Alzheimer’s Disease. One in 10 individuals over 65 and nearly half of those over 85 are at risk of Developing
Alzheimer’s; and
WHEREAS, no one knows what causes Alzheimer’s disease, but continued funding, unrelenting advocacy and
dedicated individual efforts can help conquer it, and
WHEREAS, The Alzheimer’s Services of Marshall County is a non-profit organization whose mission is to
provide patients and families with support, education, referral services; to advocate for improved public awareness
and to support research.
NOW, THEREFORE, I Tim Walker, by the virtue of the authority invested in me as Mayor of the City of
Boaz, Alabama, hereby proclaim September 17-23, 2007 as Alzheimer’s Awareness week in Boaz and
thus, urge all citizens to support in every way the activities and endeavors of the Alzheimer’s Services of
Marshall County.
