ALTRUSA MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY
WHEREAS, connecting with others and working together through volunteer services can bridge the differences that separate people and help solve serious social problems; andWHEREAS, Altrusa International Inc. of Boaz places specific emphasis on literacy and has had a major influence in Boaz since its charter in 1993; and
WHEREAS, Altrusa’s theme is "Embracing the World through Service" and the members of Boaz Altrusa Club have pledged to continue to render service to all citizens of the world; and
WHEREAS, Altrusans live by a principle that it is not enough to be good, you must be good for something. While the philosophy is to provide excellent service, Altrusa has a history of finding new needs in a community, developing and implementing plans to meet those needs, and establishing programs that the community can take pride in; and
WHEREAS, Altrusa is sponsoring a "Read In Costume and Craft Event" at the Boaz Public Library on October 27, 2007 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.; and
WHEREAS, members of Altrusa will be reading different books dressed as characters from those books and allowing the children to help decorate canvas bags that will be filled with items to send to a library in Belize.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, TIM WALKER, MAYOR OF BOAZ, ALABAMA do proclaim October 27, 2007 as Altrusa Make A Difference Day in Boaz, and do encourage all our citizens to bring their children to this event and others promoting literacy and volunteerism.

OCTOBER IS PARENT VISITATION MONTH

WHEREAS, the success and prosperity of this nation and the State of Alabama depends on the quality of education our youth receive from elementary through high school; and
WHEREAS, "Parents—The Link to Success " is the 2007 theme for Parent Visitation Month; and
WHEREAS, schools across the state are inviting parents to join as partners with teachers to strengthen student learning; and this is an opportunity to build partnerships with parents and find new ways to work together throughout the school year; and
WHEREAS, it underscores the fact that it takes more than our schools to educate our students-it takes parents, families, and the community; and by setting aside a specific month, our city and school system have the perfect opportunity to strengthen this bond.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Tim Walker, Mayor of Boaz, on behalf of the Council and myself, do hereby proclaim the month of October as PARENT VISITATION MONTH in Boaz, Alabama and urge parents and community leaders to go visit our schools and become involved.

ALZHEIMER’S AWARENESS WEEK
WHEREAS, Alzheimer’s is a devastating disease that impairs memory, reasoning, motor skills and the ability to take care of oneself. The impact of Alzheimer’s on individuals, family and our health care system makes the disease one of our nation’s primary medical, social and fiscal challenges, and
WHEREAS, Alzheimer’s affects every level of our society, and the statistics associated with the disease are sobering:An estimated 4.5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease. By the year 2050, the number of Americans with Alzheimer’s could skyrocket to 16 million. Half of adult Americans age 35 and older know someone with Alzheimer’s Disease. One in 10 individuals over 65 and nearly half of those over 85 are at risk of Developing Alzheimer’s; and
WHEREAS, no one knows what causes Alzheimer’s disease, but continued funding, unrelenting advocacy and dedicated individual efforts can help conquer it, and
WHEREAS, The Alzheimer’s Services of Marshall County is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide patients and families with support, education, referral services; to advocate for improved public awareness and to support research.
NOW, THEREFORE, I Tim Walker, by the virtue of the authority invested in me as Mayor of the City of Boaz, Alabama, hereby proclaim September 17-23, 2007 as Alzheimer’s Awareness week in Boaz and thus, urge all citizens to support in every way the activities and endeavors of the Alzheimer’s Services of Marshall County.

RUBY COX CELEBRATES 100 YEARS
WHEREAS, Ruby Cox, has rendered service to this community which deserves special recognition; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Cox will be celebrating her 100th birthday on August 28, 2007; and in recent years she has been a resident of Boaz, Alabama; and
WHEREAS, her dedication to many organizations and all her endeavors in Boaz has made Boaz a better place to live; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Cox has dedicated her later years to this community and has demonstrated in so many practical ways her deep and genuine love for the people of this city.

PIRATES GOLF TEAM RECOGNITION
WHEREAS, special recognition is due all team members and coaches of the Boaz High School Pirates Golf Team; and
WHEREAS, this team has the following JV members: Andy Chandler, Jaron Franks, and Jon William Brown; and
WHEREAS, the Boaz High School Pirates Golf Team had the following members to qualify for state and win the State Class 4A championship in May 2007 in Opelika, Alabama with a 63 over par 639 – Mark Hudgins, Mason Rogers, Skyler Dennis, Robby Spruiell, and Caleb Perry.

BOAZ HIGH SCHOOL
PIRATES BASEBALL TEAM RECOGNITION
WHEREAS, special recognition is due all team members and coaches of the Boaz High School Pirates Varsity Boys Baseball Team; and
WHEREAS, this team was the first Boaz team to win an area baseball championship (Class 4A, Area 11 Crown); and first to reach the quarterfinals of the state playoff; and furthermore the first Boaz team to advance to the semifinals of the state playoffs; and
WHEREAS, the 2007 BHS Pirates Varsity Baseball Team had a season
record of 30 wins and 13 losses; and
WHEREAS, the Boaz High School Pirates Varsity Baseball Team advanced to the Class 4A Semifinals on Friday, May 11, 2007.

BOAZ MIDDLE SCHOOL CIVIL AIR PATROL CADET SQUADRON 801
WHEREAS, The Civil Air Patrol is a non-profit auxiliary of the U. S. Air Force. Its three missions are to develop its cadets, educate Americans on the importance of aviation and space, and perform live-saving humanitarian missions; and
WHEREAS, to fulfill its goal of developing young people into responsible citizens and aerospace leaders, the Cadet Program is organized around five program elements. As cadets participate in thee five elements, they advance through a series of achievements, earning honors and increased responsibilities along the way; and
WHEREAS, these five elements are Leadership, Aerospace Education, Physical Fitness, Character Development and Activities; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Council wishes to acknowledge the good works of this organization, in which each cadet is required to do 60 hours of community service, and be First Responder and CPR qualified; and further recognize the cadets who participated in a clean-up litter campaign held on April 19, 2007 on Newt Parker Drive; and
WHEREAS, a copy of this proclamation shall be delivered to the following members of the Boaz Middle School Civil Air Patrol Cadet Squadron 801 whose names are listed hereafter: Cadet Ryan Erskine, Cadet Riley Benefield, Cadet Adam Smith, Cadet Sam Gore, Cadet Katie Young, Cadet Alexander Thompson, Cadet Casey Jones, Cadet Timothy White, and Cadet Jacob Box. ALABAMA ALL – STATE CHOIR MEMBERS RECOGNITION
WHEREAS, choir members from across the state auditioned before judges in November, within their districts; and
WHEREAS, after each district competition, the judges selected students from each choir; and
WHEREAS, students selected to be in each choir were notified by letter that they had been selected to be a part of the Alabama All-State Choir they had auditioned for; and
WHEREAS, The Festival was March 1-3, 2007 at Samford University in Birmingham; and
WHEREAS, Boaz Middle School had three girls in the SSA Choir – Alex Morris, Isis Lowe, and Megan Richards and four girls in the Mixed choir – Lauren Sanders, Hope Watkins, Emily White, and Ariel Messer; and
WHEREAS, Boaz High School had two girls in the High School SATB Choir – Courtney Crosson (11th grade) and Courtney Ray (12th grade); and 9th grader Taylor Echols participated in the High School SSA Choir; and
WHEREAS, recognition should also be given to their choir instructors April Duquette and Michele Lee; and
WHEREAS, these students represent the top choir students across the state of Alabama.
WHEREAS, it is the duty of all citizens to honor our dedicated choir students and commend them publicly.

CHILD ABUSE AWARENESS
WHEREAS, our children deserve the best we have within us. They look to us to be their protectors, role models, heroes, and heroines; and
WHEREAS, children who are loved and nurtured, grow up to love and nurture others; and
WHEREAS, they give back to their families, their neighborhoods, and the entire nation, the good that we bestowed on them, and so the chain continues or should continue; and
WHEREAS, the frightening reality is that over three million children each year are reported abused and neglected, with over one thousand dying from their injuries; and
WHEREAS, the rest of the children continue to live, but they may carry the burden of mistreatment into adulthood; and
WHEREAS, they are more likely to suffer from substance abuse, depression, learning disabilities, school failure, emotional and behavioral disorders, criminal activity, and an inability to foster healthy relationships; and
WHEREAS, child maltreatment knows no social or economic boundaries and occurs in every neighborhood in America.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Tim Walker, Mayor of Boaz, Alabama, do hereby proclaim April 23-30, 2007 as CHILD ABUSE AWARENESS WEEK in the City of Boaz.

MAYOR AND COUNCIL RECOGNIZE ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANTS, COURT CLERK/MAGISTRATES AND CITY CLERKS
WHEREAS; Court Clerks and Magistrates work in the operation of the Municipal Court and must perform complex clerical and court related duties including acts for the judge in certain cases; and
WHEREAS; Considerable knowledge of laws, rules, regulations, and procedures governing the legal process related to court administration is required along with legal terminology, including the regulations governing the filing and recording of legal instruments; and
WHEREAS; They are responsible for verifying compliance with court rules and governing laws for papers and documents prepared by the clerical staff and submitted by attorneys; and
WHEREAS; Certification by The Administrative Office of the Courts, The Alabama League of Municipalities, The Alabama Municipal Court Clerk and Magistrates Association is required.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Tim Walker, Mayor of Boaz, on behalf of the Council and myself do recognize Kaye Upton and Jackie Gibbs for the vital services they perform and their exemplary dedication to the City to which they serve.

WHEREAS, the foundation of a humane and just society is the people's willingness to work together for the common good; and experience teaches us that government by itself cannot solve all of our nation's social problems; and
WHEREAS, volunteering one's time, talents and resources has been an integral part of our American heritage since the early days of our nation; and it is essential that we continue this tradition of giving and sharing to preserve and improve the quality of life for all citizens in our communities; and
WHEREAS, the receiver is not the only one who benefits from volunteer service -- for the giver reaps the rewards of improved skills and widened horizons as well; and volunteers strengthen America and exemplify the year’s theme "Inspire By Example" because of the power volunteers have to inspire the people they help, as well as, to inspire others to serve; and
WHEREAS, the Marshall County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program transforms limited resources into unlimited possibilities to meet basic human needs in health, nutrition, education, public safety, environment and community and economic development; and
WHEREAS, over the past year, 1,013 RSVP volunteers contributed 168,560 hours of service to make a real difference in the lives of children and adults in Marshall County, and it is the duty of all citizens to honor our dedicated volunteers and celebrate the volunteer programs that contribute to the quality of life in Marshall County. I join with the citizens of this community in celebration and recognition of those who invest their time, talents and energy to reach out to others by volunteering and encourage all citizens to become involved in volunteer work.

MARCH AS AMERICAN RED CROSS MONTH
WHEREAS, each year during the month of March we formally recognize the American Red Cross and its essential humanitarian role in our community. This year, we honor the role of our local branch of the American Red Cross and their contribution in making Marshall County, and America, a stronger, safer and healthier place; and
WHEREAS, for more than 90 years, the Red Cross in Marshall County has led the effort to prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters. It has been the place where compassionate people freely give their time and talent to help prevent and ease human suffering among friends, neighbors, and even strangers; and
WHEREAS, this century alone has presented many unprecedented challenges for the Red Cross. In 2001, the US was forever changed by the events that occurred on 9/11. A few years later in December 2004, an unimaginable Tsunami, spanning an ocean and thousands of miles claimed over 225,000 lives. Next, came the hurricanes of 2005, which include Katrina, Rita and Wilma; and
WHEREAS, through it all, the Marshall County Branch of the American Red Cross needed you. This past year, the citizens of Boaz made contributions to help fund the cost of providing immediate relief to 198 victims of house fires in Marshall County. You gave your blood to save the lives of friends, neighbors and strangers. And you volunteered your time to help those in need. The branch responded to over 65 local emergencies, assisted over 40 military families and trained nearly 3,000 people in lifesaving skills such as CPR and first aid. Red Cross was there to bring aid, information and just as important, comfort, to those in need. To the Red Cross, there are no "small disasters," only neighbors in need; and
WHEREAS, the Madison/Marshall – and its nearly 3,000 volunteers and donors - provide valuable tools and education to individuals, families, workplaces, and schools, making us all stronger and more resilient.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, TIM WALKER, Mayor of Boaz, Alabama, on behalf of myself and the Council do recognize the month of March as American Red Cross Month, and encourage the citizens of Boaz to contribute your time, blood and money, to make a difference in the humanitarian fabric of this community. When we help the American Red Cross, we help each other.

ARBOR DAY 2007 IN BOAZ

ARBOR WEEK
WHEREAS, Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska, andWHEREAS, 2007 is the 135TH anniversary of the holiday and Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world, and
WHEREAS, trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce life-giving oxygen, and provide habitat for wildlife. Trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our fires, and beautify our community, and, wherever they are planted, are a source of joy and spiritual renewal, and
WHEREAS, The City of Boaz has been recognized as a "Tree City USA" by the National Arbor Day Foundation for the last seventeen years, and wishes to recognize and thank those who work toward this goal. Members of the Boaz Tree Commission are: Hank Nolle, Jimmy Davis, Peggy Halfacre, Carol Langley, Bill Roden, Jackie Pullen, Dan Floyd, Sharronda Waldrop, J. 2007 Annual Clean Up Week In Boaz
WHEREAS, the City of Boaz, Alabama, is rich in beauty and natural resources; andWHEREAS, every citizen can contribute to the protection and preservation of this beauty by his or her responsible waste handling; and
WHEREAS, the Annual Clean Up Week shall be April 21-28, 2007 in conjunction with Alabama PALS State-wide Clean Up; and
WHEREAS, the Boaz Beautification Board is working toward a "litter-free city" and will be holding its Annual Clean Up Day on April 28 from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. beginning at the Farmer’s Market with lunch provided and prizes being given away; and
WHEREAS, every citizen in the city limits of Boaz is challenged to clean up around your property this week and furthermore to participate in our annual cleanup by picking up trash on some of our most littered streets on April 28th.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Tim Walker, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF BOAZ, on behalf of myself and the Council do hereby proclaim April 21 - 28, 2007 as Annual Clean Up Week in Boaz and invite all citizens to work together to sustain our natural resources not only this week but year round!

WHEREAS, Boaz has provided significant leadership in the area of community involvement in the education of our youth grounded in the principle that educational investment is key to the community’s well being and long-term quality of life; and

NATIONAL HOSPICE/PALLIATIVE CARE MONTH
WHEREAS, hospice care and palliative care provides patients and families the highest quality care during life-limiting illness and at the end of life, through pain management and symptom control, caregiver training and assistance, and emotional and spiritual support, most often delivered in the home, allowing patients to live fully up until the final moments, surrounded and supported by loved ones, friends, and committed caregivers;
WHEREAS, last year, more than 1.2 million Americans living with life-limiting illness, and their families, received care from the 4,000 hospice and palliative care programs in communities throughout the United States;
WHEREAS, professional and compassionate hospice staff and trained volunteers—including physicians, nurses, social workers, therapists, counselors, health aides, and clergy—provide comprehensive care focused on the wishes of each individual patient a priority;
WHEREAS, family members and loved ones receive counseling and bereavement care to help them cope with the many losses they face during the illness and with the grief they experience afterwards;
WHEREAS, providing high-quality hospice care reaffirms our belief in the essential dignity of every person, regardless of age, health, or social status, and that every stage of human life deserves to be treated with the utmost respect and care;
WHEREAS, hospice and palliative care providers encourage all people to learn more about options of care and to share their wishes with family, loved ones, and their healthcare professionals.
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that I, Tim Walker, Mayor of Boaz, by virtue of the authority vested in me do hereby proclaim November 2006 as National Hospice/Palliative Care Month and encourage citizens to increase their understanding and awareness of the importance and availability of hospice services and to observe this month with appropriate activities and programs.

National Geographic Day
WHEREAS, Reading is the catalyst for our students’ future academic success, their preparation for America’s jobs of the future, and their ability to compete in a global economy; and
WHEREAS, National Geographic will be in Boaz on February 1, 2006 to video Boaz Middle School students performing a song that was written by Paul Lackey, "The Metacognition Song"; and
WHEREAS "The Metacognition Song" identifies specific strategies to increase reading skills; and
FURTHERMORE, I join with the Boaz City Board of Education, Boaz citizens, Students, and the Boaz Council in this community celebration and recognition of Paul Lackey and his song, talents and energy he presented in this song.

WHEREAS, Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska, andWHEREAS, 2006 is the 134TH anniversary of the holiday and Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world, and
WHEREAS, trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce life-giving oxygen, and provide habitat for wildlife. Trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for our fires, and beautify our community, and, wherever they are planted, are a source of joy and spiritual renewal, and
WHEREAS, The City of Boaz has been recognized as a "Tree City USA" by the National Arbor Day Foundation for the last sixteen years, and wishes to recognize and thank those who work toward this goal. Members of the Boaz Tree Commission are: Hank Nolle, Jimmy Davis, Peggy Halfacre, Carol Langley, Bill Roden, Jackie Pullen, Dan Floyd, Sharronda Waldrop, J. Darrell Nicholson, Blaine Martin and Sheila Sanders.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Tim Walker, Mayor of Boaz, Alabama, do hereby proclaim February 19 through February 25 as ARBOR WEEK in the city of Boaz with tree planting celebrations being held on February 24. I urge all citizens to support efforts such as the ones being sponsored by the Boaz Tree Commission.
